Update as of August 4, 2020
Hi OC Marathon Runners -
In response to the ongoing public health concerns, the continued uncertainty and the increasing numbers across the country in COVID-19 cases, it is with great disappointment that we announce the cancellation of our rescheduled November SDCCU OC Marathon Running Festival. Back in March when we received the approvals from all of our cities and government partners to reschedule the event, we were confident that we would come together for an amazing community celebration in November. While none of us know what the situation will be like in November, given the current rise in the coronavirus cases, we believe this is the safest and most responsible decision. Our decision, guided by public health officials and state and local restrictions, is made with the safety of all participants in mind.
We thank you for your continued support and understanding as we all navigate this together. Our small team is already hard at work planning for 2021 as we remain committed to improving health and wellness through our events all while Inspiring Kids and Adults to Fitness.
We encourage current registrants to complete your 2020 events virtually and we will mail this year’s awesome finisher’s shirt/s and medal/s as well as maintain your Legacy status and you will still qualify for the Beach Cities Challenge. All 2020 virtual runners will also receive a unique code for a 25% discount to the 2021 event. Registration will open in September at $70 for the Half and $80 for the Full. The code will make the entry prices $52.50 (plus reg fees) for the Half and $60 (plus reg fees) for the Full. Runners that have already switched their 2020 registration to virtual will also receive the discount code. *
* Unique code is runner specific. You must be registered as a 2020 Virtual Runner for the 2021 discount code to work.
Additional Options and Registration Policies
- Runners that prefer to defer their registration will receive a 100% registration credit toward your registration in 2021, 2022 or 2023 (May 1 - 2, 2021, April 30 - May 1, 2022 or May 6 - 7, 2023). A valid 2020 registration is required for your deferred registration for a future event.
- Fees paid for bib shipment or VIP will be refunded to runners that choose the virtual option for 2020. Runners that choose to defer to a future event will have their up-sell items transferred to that year as well.
- Additional instructions and a link to the registration change form will be sent to the email address that was provided in your current registration. We ask that you make your decision by August 31st , 2020. Any changes to registrations after August 31st, will have a $10 administration fee.
- Runners that have signed up to “Run For Free” with one of our Official Charities will need to check with their chosen charity to see if they have met their fundraising requirement to have a valid 2020 registration.
Thank you again and we cannot wait to get together next year in-person to Celebrate the OC.
Update as of March 21, 2020
To the Registrants of the 2020 SDCCU OC Running Festival Events:
The SDCCU OC Marathon team is so thankful and humbled for all of the support we have received from our OC Marathon Family of runners and walkers these past few days. We were getting so many emails and calls asking what we were doing given the growing concerns around COVID-19 and the CDC’s latest recommendations. We believed getting an email out announcing that we were unable to have the May 1-3, 2020 event weekend was extremely important. This has been a difficult decision and in retrospect, we would have liked to have had all of the answers prior to our announcement on March 17th.
After days of discussions with our cities, the OC Fair and Event Center, our partners, vendors and others: WE HAVE SOME GOOD NEWS! THE RACE WEEKEND AND ALL EVENTS INCLUDING THE FULL MARATHON, HALF MARATHON, AND OC 5K HAVE BEEN RESCHEDULED TO NOVEMBER 7- 8, 2020.
We recognize that for some, the new date may not work. For others, you have trained and are ready to run your distance. We understand and want to provide you with some options so that you can make the decision that works best for you. As of now, your race registration has been automatically converted to the rescheduled date of November 7 - 8th, 2020. IF you are planning to participate in the NEW date, you do not need to make any further changes.
However, if you cannot attend the NEW event or would like to choose a different option, we have provided additional options below:
VIRTUAL PARTICIPATION IN 2020: Registrants who are currently registered for the 2020 SDCCU OC Marathon, OC Half Marathon, or the OC 5K can transfer to a Virtual Run for FREE and we will ship 2020 medals and t-shirts to you at no cost. Transferring to a virtual entry will maintain your Legacy and Beach Cities Challenge status. Please click on the following link to change your current registration to a virtual run. You will be required to confirm your mailing address and after you complete your run, send us your results and we will mail your medal(s) and shirt. Results will not be “official” and cannot be used as a qualifying time. After you register, you will receive a link to submit virtual results.
FREE DEFERMENT/TRANSFER TO 2021: Registrants who are currently registered for the 2020 SDCCU OC Marathon, OC Half Marathon, or the OC 5K can choose to transfer/defer to the 2021 event taking place May 1-2, 2021 at no additional cost to you. Transferring/deferring to a 2021 entry will NOT maintain your Legacy and/or Beach Cities Challenge status.
We would like you to make your decision to switch to Virtual or Transfer to 2021 by June 1st so we can plan for November, 2020. If you choose to run virtually, we will begin shipping medals and t-shirts in mid-May and will ship weekly through mid-July. Virtual results must be submitted by July 1st.
REMINDER - If you do not choose to make your switch to the Virtual Event or Transfer to 2021, your race credit will automatically be transferred to November 7-8, 2020
REGARDING BEACH CITIES CHALLENGE/LEGACY STATUS
If you were on track to receive your Beach Cities medal at the OC in May, then a virtual 2020 race or running the November, 2020 event will qualify and you will receive your Beach Cities Sea Turtle in November. If you were on track to receive your medal at the Long Beach Marathon, then the virtual 2020 race or your registration for our postponed race will also qualify you and you will receive your Turtle at Long Beach. We recognize that this could be confusing but we assure you that you will receive your Beach Cities Sea Turtle.
If you were on track to be a Legacy Runner, running the race virtually in 2020 or running the race on November 8th will qualify you for your Legacy Gift.
Participating in a 2021 deferral will not qualify you for the Beach Cities or Legacy event.
NEW MESSAGE as of March 17, 2020
A message to our runners & the OC Marathon Family:
Our OC Marathon team works hard putting on our events and we take great pride in the positive impacts to our running community, our charity partners, and our mission to inspire kids and adults to fitness. Given the growing concerns around COVID-19, and the CDC’s latest recommendations, we have sadly decided we are unable to host the SDCCU OC Marathon, OC Half Marathon, and the Celebrate OC 5K during the weekend of May 1-3, 2020.
Our team is diligently responding to this unprecedented situation. We are evaluating possible options that will include conversion of your registration to a virtual run where you would still receive your 2020 shirt and medal (all Legacy and Beach Cities Challenge participants will maintain their status under this option) or a complimentary deferral to the May 2021 events. We are also speaking with our local agencies and partners to determine if a postponement to a fall date is possible. Unfortunately, we will not be able to offer refunds.
Our hearts go out to all of you that have been training, fundraising, and were planning on running this event. This was an extremely difficult decision for the SDCCU OC Marathon team, but one that was necessary for the safety and well-being of our community.
We appreciate your patience and understanding and will share our next steps in the coming days.
Gary and the OC Marathon Family
