The John Wayne Cancer Foundation (JWCF) has been a proud charity partner of the OC Marathon since 2009, and they continue to inspire with their big activation at the mile 9 water station–known as the “John Wayne Waterin’ Hole.” This iconic station is a highlight for both runners and supporters, as JWCF motivates everyone with their mission to lead the fight against cancer with courage, strength, and grit. Established in 1985 in memory of John Wayne, the foundation honors his legacy by supporting innovative cancer research, education, awareness, and support. After Wayne’s personal battle with cancer–first defeating lung cancer in 1964 and later succumbing to stomach cancer 15 years later–his family founded JWCF to help others facing the same challenge. Today, JWCF works to improve cancer patients’ outcomes and to blaze a trail to a world without cancer.

One of the foundation’s key initiatives is their John Wayne Cancer Foundation Surgical Oncology Program, which trains the next generation of cancer surgeons. Partnering with top academic institutions, the program gives these surgeons (known as John Wayne Fellows), two years of advanced training in modern techniques that will directly impact cancer care worldwide. Additionally, JWCF runs Block the Blaze, a youth education program that has educated over 675,000 youths on skin cancer prevention. By focusing on sun safety and early detection, this initiative plays a crucial role in reducing the risk of skin cancer, one of the most preventable and treatable forms of cancer.
